Fidget Quilts: Pocket with Buckle
This is one of the ways the family can customize the quilt. They can be mementos, a silk scarf, prayer beads, or other unbreakable objects in the pocket.

The backing on this piece is hidden until they undo the buckle. The backing should be a big bold design, a little reward for opening the pouch.
Print the pattern page single sided on cardstock or heavy paper. Cut out each pattern piece. You will trace around the pieces on the interfacing or fabric.
Notice that the bottom half of the pocket is a trapezoid. It will still be sewn to the backing along the sides and bottom edge. The extra width at the top edge makes the pocket bunch out a bit so that you can put something in the pocket.
Materials:
- Basic backing block in the selected fabric. A big bold print is good here; a little surprise when they look in the pocket.
- Buckle, it can have a prong for fastening or not, about 1" is good. (Use what you've got.)
- 2 pieces of fabric in contrasting colors
- Pattern from pattern page for bottom half of the pocket.
- Make a pattern for the top half of the pocket by measuring a rectangle 5"x7" on card-stock.
- Make a strap that is the right width for the buckle. You will need about 6" for each strap.
Instructions:
Trace two of each pattern onto single sided iron-on interfacing.
Place the iron on interfacing onto the wrong side of fabric with rough side touching the fabric, and iron in place.
Stitch the two parts of the top together and stitch together leaving one long edge open.
Stitch the two parts of the bottom together and stitch together leaving the longest edge open.
Turn the two pieces right side out, press, then top stitch along all sides.
Sew the top piece to the top of the backing, centering it, so that the sides will not be caught in the side seams when the block is attached to another block.
Position the bottom of the pocket along the bottom of the backing, stitch in place.
Next, line up the sides of the pocket with the sides of the backing. This will leave a bit of space along the top so that something can be put in the pocket.
Attach the buckle to one of the straps and sew below the buckle to secure.
Attach the buckle strap to the bottom seam, and the other star to the top seam.
Buckle the strap, if you want to, add eyelet to the upper strap.
Notes:
- You can use either heavy fabric for the strap, or make a layered strap using two pieces of fabric with double sided interfacing in between the layers.
- A piece of Velcro, or other fastener may be added to keep the strap in place. (Optional)
