Fidget Quilts: Face
The face is the most work, but she is the show stopper! Everyone reaches out and strokes her hair.
I wanted an anime look: big eyes, a heart shaped face, cupid bow mouth and lots of gorgeous hair.
Materials:
- Basic backing block Something simple would be nice here.
- Enough Double Sided Iron On Adhesive Film, for the face and neck.
- Flesh colored fabric in a double knit, or something that doesn't ravel. (If you can't find a color you like, try dying some fabric using tea.
- 2 Big eyes!
I used Black Plastic Safety Eyes, Mushroom Domed Round Buttons Sewing Shank 20mm. (I got a bag of 100 for $13)
- Hair, I used Estako Velvet Chenille Blanket amigurumi Yarn for Crocheting and Knitting Super Bulky 100 gr (132 yds) (1810 - Black) $10, enough for about 50 quilts.
- Bangs: I used Ice Fabrics Craft Faux Fur Fabric Pre Cut Rolls - 2"x60" Fur Ribbon Mohair Fabric Strips - Super Soft and Fuzzy, $11, enough for about 50 quilts.
- Fine tip fabric markers
Instructions:
From the pattern page, cut out the patterns for the face, neck and eyelids.
- Trace the face and neck pattern on the double side adhesive film, making sure both pieces are aligned in the same direction. (Use a ball point pen on the waxy side.)
- Cut out the pieces from the adhesive film, and iron to the fabric, then cut out the fabric pieces, (Double knits are stretchy, and the adhesive will keep the shape.)
- Trace the eyelid pattern onto the fabric without any interfacing. Cut out. (The eyelids can be pushed open and shut, so it needs to stay stretchy.)
- Remove the paper backing from the face and neck pieces and iron them onto the backing, centering it from left to right, with the neck near the bottom edge.
- Stitch around the edges of the face and neck to attach to the baking. Use either matching thread or invisible thread.
- Sew the eyes in place through all the layers, making sure they are secure.
- Position an eyelid piece on the eye. Hold it in place with your thumb. Sew the eyelid in place starting at the corner near the nose.
(Try to keep it from stretching. If there is too much fabric when you get to the other side, cut off a tiny bit with sharp scissors.)
Take a deep breath and do the other eyelid.
- Cut a piece of the fur to use for bangs. The piece will be about 1/4" x 5". The bangs will actually be longer than 1/4" if you cut just the fabric and not the fur.
When cutting fake fur, work from the fabric side, position the scissors so that you cut just the fabric and not the fur.
- Sew the 5" long piece of fur to the top of the head, working from one ear to the other.
- Cut 3 or 4 pieces of the yarn about 10" long. If there are strands twisted together, unravel them, Lay them lengthwise, then take one strand and use it to tie the strands together in the middle.
- Sew this bundle of yarn to one side of the head, just above the ear. Repeat for the other side.
- Use the fabric markers to add the mouth, and nose to the face. Very lightly, use a light pink to add a blush to the cheeks.
- Using a fine tip black marker, gently stroke eyelashes on both sides of the eyelid. Add eyebrows.
Notes:
- I practiced a few faces on scraps of fabric before I attempted the face.
- She took a bit longer than some of the other blocks, but definitely worth it!
