Fidget Quilts: Finger Puppets
This block can be used to encourage talking.

Materials:
- Basic backing block Try to find some scenery, a store, a farm, or other place that people might visit.
- Small pieces of Velcro, about 3/4" square: this has two parts: the hooks or rough part, and the loops or fuzzy part.
To keep things straight, I always attach the hook part to the backing, and the fuzzy part to the detachable object.
The fuzzy part will be sewn to the back of the head to look like hair, so black, brown, or other hair color is best.
- Skin colored cloth for the puppets, preferably a material such as double knit that doesn't ravel.
Two different colors is good. If you don't have any skin colored, you can dye it using tea leaves.
- Fine tip fabric markers for the face
- Small piece of colored fabric for the shirt, blouse, or scarf.
Instructions:
- Stitch the two hook pieces of Velcro to the backing towards the middle, about 2 or 3" apart where they don't interfere with the scenery.
- Cut two of the skin colored fabric thumb shape, sew the fuzzy Velcro piece to one to look like hair.
- With right sides together, sew the two pieces together, leaving the bottom open.
- Turn right side out.
- Using fabric markers add a face to the front of the puppet (don't forget to add ears!)
- Cut a strip of fabric about 1" by 4" and wrap it around the neck to look like a blouse, shirt, scarf, or bandanna.
Stitch in place and trim the bottom edge.
- Put your finger inside the puppet as you stitch around the neck, so that you don't sew it closed.
Notes:
- There are many kinds of finger puppets, some have arms and legs, some are fantasy characters, others are animals. For this project, I decided that just the face was enough, because if you add arms and legs, the face gets too small. I use one woman and one man, because that is the most versatile for engaging the user.
