Fidget Quilts: Flowers to Button

Three flower blossoms are attached with buttons.

Materials:

• Basic backing block A small size print, or floral, or light green works well.
• From the pattern page, cut out the patterns for the flowers.
• Enough Double Sided Iron On Adhesive Film, for the 3 flowers.
• 6 different, bright colors for the flowers: The flowers are reversible, so you can have red on one side and purple on the other side.
  
• 3 buttons that are all the same size.
• Leaves cut from green fabric.

Instructions:

Double Sided Iron On Adhesive Film has one side with a waxy adhesive, the other side has paper that looks like waxed paper. It is hard to trace the pattern onto the paper side, trace the pattern onto the waxy side. A ball point pen works well.

1. Trace the pattern pieces onto the adhesive film and cut then out.
2. Place the adhesive film on the wrong side of the fabric used for one side of the flower.
3. Iron in place, then cut them out. Your pieces will have the fabric for the back of the flower on one side and the protective paper for the adhesive film on the other side.
4. Remove the paper from the piece, and iron the other flower on.
5. Make the buttonholes following the instructions for your machine, but use a slightly larger size button to measure.
   (We're not trying to keep the shirt from falling open, we want someone with arthritis to be able to button it.)
   Put the buttonholes more or less in the middle of the blossom.
6. On the backing piece, use green thread and a zig-zag stitch to make stems for the flowers.
7. Sew on some green leaves, just stitching down the middle of the leaf.
8. Use the button foot to sew the buttons to the backing following the instructions for your machine.
9. Button the flowers onto the backing. If they are too tight to unbutton easily, you can cut the buttonhole a little bit bigger.

Notes:

• When you sew on buttons with a sewing machine, you must lower the feed dogs (the little teeth that move the fabric as you sew). (It is probably a lever or switch on the back of the machine). Don't forget to put them back up when you finish.
• I had some leaves from silk flowers that I used but you could use any green fabric. Cut them out with pinking shears if you want to get fancy.
