zipper pocket

This is one of the ways the family can customize the quilt. They can be mementos, silk scarf, prayer beads, or other unbreakable objects in the pocket.

The backing on this piece is hidden until they unzip the zipper. The backing should be a big bold design, a little reward for unzipping the zipper.

Instructions:

These instructions make it easy to sew the zipper in place without stitching across the slider, which can break or bend the needle.

  • Fold on the diagonal and cut along the diagonal line.
  • Place two contrasting piecesc, right side together, and baste along the diagonal.
  • Press open the seam.
  • installing zipper 1
  • Lay the zipper along the diagonal basted seam, making sure that it is straight and lays face down on the seam.
  • installing zipper 2
  • Use tape to hold the zipper in place along the outside edge. If it is too close to the zipper teeth, it will get caught oin the stitching, making it more difficult to remove the tape at the end.
  • Using a zipper foot, stitch along the edge of the zipper, starting below the slider on the left, down to the end, then back up on the right until you get to the slider.
  • Most of the zipper is now sewn in place. Remove the basting thread but not the tape.
  • Unzip the zipper part way down so that you can stitch the top half of the zipper.
  • Remove the tape.
  • Make a small dart on the inside of each of the edges so that is measures 7"x8.5" to fit the backing, (This will make it possible to put small objects in
  • Sew the zipper placate to the backing along the outer edges.
